There are many possible causes of conjunctivitis and treatments vary accordingly.

Three common causes only are mentioned here but many other causes are possible.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is characterized by redness, irritation, white/yellow discharge and often crusting of the eyelids.

It is more common in children than adults and is often self-limiting, but can be treated by appropriate eye-drops or ointments if necessary.

Viral conjunctivitis is mainly caused by adenovirus and is often associated with an upper respiratory infection.

Symptoms include redness, irritation, and watery discharge.

Both bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are highly contagious until the discharge resolves and strict hygiene measures should be employed.

This includes:

• ​Refraining from touching the eyes and refraining from sharing towels.
• Frequent hand washing should be employed.
