Sinus problems occur when the sinuses or the lining of the nose become inflamed and swollen, causing congestion, irritation, pain and discomfort.

Sinus problems can be short-term lasting only a week to a month (acute) or may be longer lasting for several months or much longer (chronic).

There are several causes of sinus problems some of which are listed below:

• ​Allergy
• Infection
• Local environmental irritants like smoke or dust
• Drug induced

In some cases, symptoms may be due to the overuse of decongestant nasal sprays which initially help with congestion but with overuse become part of the problem.
