Vaginal Thrush is an infection caused usually by a micro-organism called Candida albicans, although other Candida species like Candidia glabrata, can also be involved.

Candida in small numbers can exist in the vagina without necessarily causing problems but when numbers increase for whatever reason, symptoms of vaginal thrush can occur. Self-diagnosis is unreliable but symptoms of infection can include itching and soreness in and around the vagina and often accompanied by a white thick odourless discharge.

Thrush is uncommon before puberty and after menopause if there are no underlying risk factors. Common risk factors include:

• ​antibiotic use
• diabetes
• pregnancy
• weakened immune system

Before starting treatment, it is important to ensure that other causes like bacterial vaginosis, dermatological conditions or local irritants are excluded as the cause.
